An Open Mic is not a new concept but it seems not too many know what it really takes. An open mic or open mike is a live show where audience members may perform at the microphone. These events are typically focused on performance arts like poetry, music, and comedy.
Much of the attendees that night barely had an idea what an Open Mic was. They came because they wanted to show support to their friends and see first hand the buzz going around regarding the La Habra Art Gallery. The host, Mon Concepcion, whose task is getting performers on and off stage, is a singer-songwriter extraordinaire who has made the rounds of the restaurant circuits hosting Open Mic sessions. The stage was set-up, guitars, bass, cajon, tamborines, microphones. One by one, the performers filled the gallery with rhythm and blues, show off comedic talents, belt out ballads as duets, perform three part harmonies on folk songs, and vintage hits. As the artists performed, the guests helped themselves with some food at the buffet and drinks table. There was also a Sentiment Table furnished with flowers and blank note cards. Anyone could pick a card, write a sentiment, and pick a flower to give to the most important woman of their life as next day was Mother’s Day. The evening turned out to be an impromptu getaway from the maddening crowd. If the selfies, smiles and laughter were any indication, of a good time, there sure were a lot. Amidst the Fine Art of the Tuesday Painters Show, it was an evening of Art, Music, and Good time.
For those who missed this event, mark your calendar, and don’t miss the opportunity to show your talents and take the most significant man in your life to a good time because the Open Mic will return at the Gallery on June 20, Saturday before Father’s Day.
